Anxiety can show up in many ways. Often it feels like not being able to "turn off". The person facing this feels that they have to be prepared for anything and they constantly experience a sense of impending doom.
Anxiety changes the nervous system- our regulating system. The nervous system that has been trained to focus on survival often goes into hyperaroused and hypoaroused. This can feel like a rollercoaster jumping from moments of feeling agitated, hypervigilant, anxious energy to moments of shutdown, depression, numbness, and lethargy.
Anxiety can also show up in more targeted ways. Anxiety might focus specifically on health problems, relational issues, existential dread, performance and career competence, intimacy issues, etc.
THE POWER OF THE THERAPEUTIC RELATIONSHIP
Research has shown us that having a therapist that is a good fit is key to effective therapy. When a trusting relationship is built, healing is possible. Hurts in relationship can be healed through relationship- relationship with oneself and relationship with a trusted practitioner.
INTERNAL FAMILY SYSTEMS
IFS is a therapeutic modality that helps people access the parts that are scary to name. From there healing is possible through self-energy: which means creating a compassionate dialogue with all the parts of ourselves, so the protective parts (which often are fearful) don't have to work so hard and have such extreme roles.
Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing supports people in processing any type of distressing experience. When these past events are responsible for present day anxiety, this modality helps people separate the past from the present so they can move forward.
